KYA is a 3 day student led conference where students serve in various roles as part of a model state government, and articulate their beliefs as they debate and vote on bills and issues affecting the Commonwealth. Below are some highlights from the conference:
The bill An act to allow schools and businesses to enforce a better approach to mental health and mental illness throughout the state written by Ashlyn R., Michaela H., and Cheyenne A. was passed in committee the first night, and was presented at the State Capitol Building in Frankfort.
The bill An act to require psychological background checks for all purchasers of firearms in Kentucky written by Collin D., Mallory P., and Bethany S. was passed by both the House and Senate and and signed into law by the governor.
Katelyn M. demonstrated her journalistic talents as a distinguished member in Media Corp program.
Ashlyn R. and Collin D. were recognized as distinguished speakers.
Williamstown High School was recognized as a Delegation of Excellence.
