Ice Cream Math
We will be doing a Math activity throughout the year called Ice Cream Math. This program is designed to improve your child’s basic addition and subtraction math facts. One or two times a week the boys and girls will be given a test that will cover ten basic addition and ten basic subtraction math facts (twenty problems total). The students will have 1 ½ minutes to complete this test. Throughout the year, the Ice Cream Math tests will cover the twenty-four basic addition and subtraction math facts starting at 0. We will begin taking these tests in September.
If a student earns a 100% on his/her test they will be able to move up to the next level on the following test. For example: if a student starts on the 0 math facts and gets a 100% they will move up to the 1’s math facts on the following test. If a student receives a 99% or lower they will retake the same test the following test day until they earn a 100%.
The goal of Ice Cream Math is to be at the 12’s math facts by Christmas break and have a frozen yogurt freeze pop and then to be at the 24’s by the end of May for a frozen yogurt and fruit sundae party!
Knowing your basic math facts is a must for any student. If a student does not know his/her basic math facts he/she will more than likely struggle throughout the school year in math. The entire second grade will be doing similar activities to help our students learn their basic math facts. You may help your child by testing them at home, using flash cards, giving them verbal math facts in the car, etc. I have extra practice flash cards. If you’d like to use these to practice at home, please let me know.
Thank you and let’s get working on those math facts!
