Strategies for Attacking New Words

                      

Bird’s Eye

Look at the Picture.

Look at the picture for clues if you need help.

                       

Gone Fishin’

Fish for another vowel sound.

Try a common vowel sound and read the word. Check if it makes sense. If the word doesn’t make sense, try another vowel sound.

                       

Stretchy Snake

S-T-R-E-T-C-H It Out.

Stretch the word out slowly. Put the sounds together to figure out the word.

                        

Skippy Frog

Skip It, Skip It!

Skip the word. Read to the end of the sentence. “Hop back” and read it, read it.

                        

Chunky Monkey

Chunk the Word.

Look for a chunk (-ing, -at), word part (be-, -er), or word that you know (-and, -it).

Check If It Make Sense.

When you think you know the word, reread the sentence and check if it makes sense.
